CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.
- From strap fabric, cut:
- 2-3 ½ x38” strips or (from fat quarter cut 4- 3 ½ x 19 ½)
- From pocket fabric, cut:
- 2—10 ½ x20” rectangles
- 1—10 ½ ×14″ rectangle
- From carrier and lining fabric, cut:
- 1—16 ½ x 34 ½” rectangle for lining
- 1—16 ½ x 34 ½” rectangle for carrier, cut in half so you have 2 -16½x 17½
- From batting, cut:
- 1—16 ½ x 34 ½” rectangle
- 1—10 ½ x20” rectangle
Straps:
Make two 3 ½ x 38 ½ inch strips. Fold a strip in half lengthwise and press. Unfold and press long edges in to meet at the center crease. Fold in half, press and topstitch down each long edge.
Pocket Unit:
- With wrong sides together, fold pocket fabric (10½ x 14”) in half widthwise to make a
10½ ×7″ pocket piece; press. Topstitch 1⁄8″ from folded edge.
- Layer batting (10½×20″) rectangle with a 10½ ×20″ pocket piece on top with right side up. Then lay pocket piece on top aligning with one short end; baste pocket piece short edges through all layers.
- Top the above pocket unit with remaining 10½ x 20” pocket piece with right sides together. Sew long edges to make a tube. Turn right side out and press.
- Then mark lines 21⁄4″ from short edges. On pocket piece, mark lines 4″ from long edges between top edge of pocket and 21⁄4″ marked line. (see diagram) Topstitch on drawn lines through all layers, backstitching at beginning and end, to make pocket unit.
- For outer carrier Unit(See diagram below) Use fabric 16½ x17 ½” pieces. On each piece, position strap on 16½ side, 3 3⁄8″ from rectangle long edges. Align strap raw edges with a rectangle short edge; baste. Topstitching the first 6″ of strap ends in place a scant 1⁄8″ from strap edges stitch to make an outer carrier unit. Repeat to make a second outer carrier unit.
- Layer carrier units right sides together with straps inside. Sew together the edge with the straps leaving a 6 inch opening in the center. Press open.
- Assembly: place batting on a flat surface. Top with carrier lining right side up. Center pocket unit atop carrier lining; baste or pin. (Pocket unit is wider than batting and carrier lining to accommodate height of casserole or baking pan.) See diagram 7.
- 3. As in Diagram 8, lay outer carrier unit right side down on top of lining and pocket unit. Gently pull straps through opening to allow layers to lie flat. Pin edges.
- Use water-soluble marking pen to mark curved edge of Corner Cutting Pattern (se below) in each corner. Trim on marked lines, adjusting pins as needed. Sew together all around. Turn right side out through center opening. Press. Slip stitch opening. Top stich if desired.
